Lesson Book: Home Base and Navigational Framework for Navigating through the Content

The Lesson Book provides short introductions to activities, icons for launching activities, and access to other navigation tools, such as the index, glossary and table of contents. It allows a sequencing of the topics without restricting free access to any part of the course. Teaching takes place in the activities themselves, not by reading the Lesson Book. Activities do not begin until you click on their icons.

In the CD version, the Lesson Book tracks your progress, "checking off" activities as they are completed. Your progress is stored in a Student Progress File, which also stores your name and serial number.

An integral component of the CD-based Lesson Book is the Control Bar, located at the top of each page. Icons in the Control Bar provide a way to move forward and backward in the Lesson Book, access to homework exercises and projects appropriate for the Lesson, and a shortcut method for launching other key components of the course.

Narrated Expositions: Guidance from Experienced Teachers

Expositions are brief presentations of a single concept or method. You'll hear a high-quality audio narrative synchronized with text, pictures, animations, and sounds that explain the concept of interest. The user can stop, replay, or fast-forward through the exposition, and can re-play the activity as many times as needed to ensure a full understanding of the concept. Expositions can include questions that the user needs to answer by pressing the correct button or typing into an answer box, and Study Questions that encourage the user to stop and think about issues of importance. Hints or answers to the Study Questions can be accessed with a simple mouse click.

Interactive Tools: Allow Users to Explore and Visualize Key Concepts

The MediaDX framework allows for the inclusion of interactive tools that engage the user in active learning. Interactive tools allow the user to explore and visualize concepts, resulting in a deeper understanding. We currently have a library of tools that can be incorporated into new courses, or used as a foundation for a new tool or set of tools.

Video Clips: Instill Real-World Motivation

Several of the MediaDX courses we have produced include video clips synchronized with an audio narration. The CD version of the MediaDX technology includes an integrated QuickTime player. Web courses can launch any web-based video player, such as Apple's QuickTime, RealNetwork's RealOnePlayer, and Windows Media Player.

Links to External Applications: Integrate with Real-World Applications

MediaDX courses can include instruction on how to use software tools that relate to the topics being taught. For example, our ActivStats statistics course includes activities that teach how to use Data Desk, Excel, MINITAB, and others. These activities include a link that launches the external program to allow the user to apply what has just been taught

Quizzes: Valuable Feedback on Progress

We feel it is important to provide feedback to the user on whether a concept or skill has been mastered. The drag-and-drop quiz activities allow users to test their knowledge and decide whether to proceed to the next activity or go back and review the preceding activities. Because the results of the quiz are seen only by the user there is no incentive to "cheat", resulting in the user getting accurate feedback.
