Technical FAQs

Why can't I add Data Desk/XL to Excel 2008 for Mac?

Data Desk/XL is an Excel add-in created with Visual Basic. Microsoft has ceased support for Visual Basic in Excel 2008 on Macintosh, therefore Data Desk/XL will not work in Excel 2008. We are investigating a solution to this problem. Please check back for updates.

Why can't I view the help files in Windows Vista?

Windows Vista no longer supports the help file format used in Data Desk/XL. This will be addressed with the next version of Data Desk/XL. In the interim, you can download a plug-in from Microsoft to view the Data Desk/XL help. To download this plug-in, visit Microsoft's Download Center.

What operating systems does Data Desk/XL Pro support?

Data Desk/XL can be used with computers running Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

If you have any problems using DDXL with Windows XP, go to Tools... Options... in the Excel menu bar. Click the security tab in the dialogue window that appears, then click the "Macro Security..." button. In the next window that appears, click the Trusted Sources tab and make sure the "Trust all installed add-ins and templates" box is checked.

What Microsoft Excel versions does Data Desk/XL Pro support?

On Windows, Excel 2000 or later. On Macintosh, Excel X or Excel 2004. (DDXL does not work in Excel 2008 for Mac.) See our Data Desk/XL Requirements web page for more information.

How do I install the Data Desk/XL Pro add-in?

Installing DDXL is a two-part process. First, obtain the correct version for your system. If you are using Windows, you will need to start the DDXL installer, which will automatically copy the necessary files to your hard disk. If you are using Mac OS X, you will need to open the disk image (.dmg file) and drag the DDXL folder to the appropriate location on your hard disk as instructed.

Once the files have been installed on your computer, complete the following steps in Excel:

Mac OS X Instructions:

DDXL works in Excel X and Excel 2004 on the Macintosh OS X 10.3.9 or better. DDXL does not work in Excel 2008.

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel X or Excel 2004.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Add-Ins...
  3. Choose Select...
  4. Navigate to the file "DDXL Add-In.xll" and click OK. (The default location is /Applications/Microsoft Office/DDXL/DDXL Add-In.xll)
  5. Verify that there is a checkmark in front of the DDXL Add-In, click OK.

Windows Instructions:

For all versions prior to Excel 2007:

  1. Launch Excel and choose the Add-Ins command from the Tools menu in Excel's menu bar. This opens a dialog box with a list of all Excel add-ins currently installed. Click on the Browse button.
  2. Use the dialog that opens to find the DDXL add-in file. (The default location is Program Files\DDXL\). Double-click the file DDXL Add-In.xll.
  3. Once DDXL has been added to the add-ins list, make sure the DDXL box is selected and click the OK button. You should see a DDXL menu added to your Excel menu bar.

For Excel 2007 only:

  1. Launch Excel 2007 and click the Microsoft Office Button, then click the Excel Options button.
  2. Click the Add-Ins category.
  3. Select Manage -> Excel Add-ins, then click the "Go..." button. This opens a dialog box with a list of all Excel add-ins currently installed. Click the "Browse..." button.
  4. Use the dialog that opens to find the DDXL add-in file. (The default location is Program Files\DDXL\). Double-click the file DDXL Add-In.xll.
  5. Once DDXL has been added to the add-ins list, make sure the DDXL box is selected and click the OK button. You should see an Add-Ins tab in Excel with a DDXL menu.

Excel 2007 crashes when I attempt to use a DDXL command, or the Names and Columns selection box is blank.

There is a known issue with DDXL version 2.0 using Excel 2007 that may cause the program to crash, or result in a blank Names and Columns selection box. To prevent this problem, highlight a range of cells by clicking and dragging your mouse over the cells in the spreadsheet. Do not select entire columns by clicking on the column headers. Version 2.1 of DDXL addresses this issue.
